TYPE 2 DIABETES

What Is Type 2 Diabetes?

Type 2 diabetes is a chronic metabolic condition that affects the body’s ability to regulate blood sugar (glucose) levels. It occurs when the body either becomes resistant to insulin—the hormone that helps glucose enter cells—or doesn’t produce enough insulin to maintain normal glucose levels. Over time, elevated blood sugar can lead to widespread inflammation, vascular damage, nerve injury, and dysfunction in nearly every organ system.

At EASTSIDE LONGEVITY

We understand that Type 2 diabetes is not just a blood sugar problem—it is a complex inflammatory and metabolic disorder.  Dr. Frank Marinkovich, MD, we offer a personalized approach that focuses on identifying root causes, reversing risk factors, and restoring long-term metabolic balance.

Common Symptoms

In its early stages, Type 2 diabetes may present with no obvious symptoms. However, as blood sugar levels rise, common signs include:

  • Increased thirst and frequent urination

  • Fatigue and low energy

  • Blurred vision

  • Increased hunger, especially after eating

  • Slow-healing wounds or frequent infections

  • Numbness or tingling in the hands or feet

  • Unexplained weight changes

Even mild elevations in blood sugar can contribute to systemic inflammation and silently damage blood vessels, nerves, kidneys, and the brain.

Causes and Risk Factors

Multiple factors can contribute to the development of Type 2 diabetes, many of which are preventable or reversible:

  • Obesity or excess visceral fat

  • Sedentary lifestyle

  • Unhealthy diet high in processed carbohydrates

  • Chronic stress and poor sleep

  • Genetics or family history of diabetes

  • Hormonal imbalances (e.g., insulin resistance, cortisol dysregulation)

  • Chronic low-grade inflammation

As insulin resistance builds up in the body, the pancreas compensates by producing more insulin—until it can no longer keep up, and blood sugar rises.

Diagnosing Type 2 Diabetes

At EASTSIDE LONGEVITY, we use a thorough, integrative diagnostic process, including:

  • Review of medical history and risk factors

  • Comprehensive lab testing (HbA1c, fasting glucose, insulin levels)

  • Inflammation and lipid panel assessments

  • Evaluation of weight, waist circumference, and metabolic indicators

  • Screening for early signs of complications (e.g., neuropathy, eye changes, kidney function)

This allows us to detect not only full-blown diabetes but also prediabetes and early insulin resistance, so we can intervene as early as possible.
