PERIPHERAL NEUROPATHY

What Is Peripheral Neuropathy?

Peripheral neuropathy refers to damage or dysfunction of the peripheral nerves—the nerves outside the brain and spinal cord—that transmit signals between the central nervous system and the rest of the body. This condition can affect sensory, motor, or autonomic nerves, resulting in a wide range of symptoms such as numbness, tingling, pain, weakness, or changes in circulation and digestion.

At EASTSIDE LONGEVITY

We understand how debilitating peripheral neuropathy can be. Whether caused by diabetes, injury, or other chronic conditions, our goal is to help patients manage symptoms, address underlying causes, and improve nerve function with a personalized and integrative care approach.

Common Symptoms

Peripheral neuropathy symptoms often begin gradually and may worsen over time. Depending on which nerves are affected, you may experience:

  • Numbness or reduced sensation

  • Tingling, burning, or “pins and needles” sensations

  • Sharp, stabbing, or electric shock-like pain

  • Muscle weakness or cramping

  • Poor coordination or balance

  • Sensitivity to touch or temperature

  • Changes in skin color or temperature in hands/feet

Symptoms may occur in one area or affect multiple regions, often starting in the feet or hands and progressing upward.

Causes and Risk Factors

Peripheral neuropathy has many potential causes. The most common include:

  • Diabetes (diabetic neuropathy)

  • Autoimmune diseases (e.g., lupus, rheumatoid arthritis)

  • Vitamin deficiencies (especially B1, B6, B12, E)

  • Chronic alcohol use

  • Certain medications (e.g., chemotherapy, antibiotics)

  • Infections (e.g., shingles, Lyme disease, hepatitis C)

  • Trauma or nerve compression (e.g., carpal tunnel, herniated discs)

  • Toxin exposure (e.g., heavy metals, industrial chemicals)

Identifying and addressing the root cause is critical to developing an effective treatment strategy.

Diagnosis at EASTSIDE LONGEVITY

We begin with a comprehensive medical history and neurological exam to evaluate reflexes, sensation, muscle strength, and coordination. Depending on the presentation, additional tests may include:

  • Blood tests for vitamin levels, glucose, autoimmune markers, or toxins

  • Nerve conduction studies (EMG/NCV)

  • Imaging (MRI or ultrasound) if structural causes are suspected

By understanding the origin and severity of the neuropathy, we can tailor your care plan to improve outcomes and restore nerve function.
